Emotional Intelligence
Emotional intelligence is the capacity to understand one's own emotions (self-awareness), manage them effectively (self-regulation), and comprehend and share the feelings of others (empathy).

Action Items
Teach Emotional Vocabulary
It's crucial for kids to identify their emotions because it's the first step towards managing them. Naming feelings helps children understand what they're experiencing, allowing them to communicate their needs, develop coping strategies, and build empathy for others, all vital for healthy social and emotional development.
Validate Feelings
When children express an emotion, acknowledge it. Instead of saying, "Don't be sad," try, "I see you're feeling sad about that. It's okay to feel sad." This helps them feel understood and teaches them that their emotions are valid, even if their behavior isn't always acceptable.
Teach Coping Skills and Acceptable Behavior
Once children can identify their emotions, help them learn healthy ways to manage them. Engage in imaginative play where your child can act out feelings and social situations. Have clear boundaries around behavior. Help children understand that while all feelings are okay, not all ways of expressing them are.
